The National Association of Women in Construction plans for the 2nd and 3rd Quarters of their year
Our NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) CAD Drafting Competition was distributed to local participating High Schools in September, 2009. The winning project will be judged regionally and hopefully go on to be judged nationally. Member Rachael McKinney of RK&K Engineers, LLP and her award winning efforts are making this happen in our NAWIC #141 Richmond, VA Chapter.
The 2008 - 2009 Block Kids Competition will be held at Mary Munford Elementary School once again this year one afternoon in February as part of their after school program. The local winner’s project will then go on to be judged in the Regional Block Kids Competition who’s winner will be submitted in the NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) National Block Kids Competition. April Shumate, CCA of KBS, Inc. will once again spearhead this effort.
Our 2008- 2009 Design Build Competition will begin in February, 2009 in participating Henrico County Middle Schools. This year they will be given the choice of completing the Garden Shed Project, the Garage Project or the new AGC & NAWIC Commercial Project. The Associated General Contractors of Virginia (AGC) - Richmond District has joined with NAWIC to produce a video introducing career opportunities in the commercial construction industry to young people as well as introducing the NAWIC & AGC Commercial Project. Winning projects from each school are to be submitted by May 8, 2009 for judging with the winners’ projects showcased at our NAWIC #141 Industry Appreciation NIght (IAN) on May 19, 2009 at the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club. Winners of the Block Kids Competition, the CAD Drafting Competition and our Scholarship recipients will be recognized at IAN as well.
Plans are underway for our WIC Week Events and range from job site tours, to special speakers, to civic projects, to social events! We celebrate women in the construction industry!
Our NAWIC Annual Golf Tournament known far and wide as one of the best around will take place May 7th, 2009 at the Sycamore Creek Golf Course in Manakin-Sabot, VA. Mickey Jennings of Hourigan Construction Corporation has things under control and is currently looking for sponsors, volunteers, and players!
